After the weirdness of last week's carrot pudding, I figured you all need a REAL dessert recipe. This is pretty much apple pie without the crust.
You're welcome.
The Ingredients.
serves 8
4 Granny Smith apples
4 Golden Delicious apples
1/2 cup sugar (feel free to cut back)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 cup butter, sliced
vanilla ice cream and/or sweetened whipped cream (optional, for serving)
The Directions.
Use a 4-quart slow cooker. If you've only got a 6-quart, that's okay, just check on your apples after 3-4 hours on low.
Peel, core, and slice the apples. Curse yourself that you've never taken the plunge to purchase one of those cool apple gadget things...
Plop the apples into your slow cooker and toss the slices with sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and butter slices. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours, or until apples have reached desired tenderness. If you cook too long, the apples will turn into applesauce--- not a bad thing, but something to note!
The Verdict.
If you don't like this, then I don't think we can be friends.

Who could not like this?! Seriously. Home in a crock pot. Good thing I had applesauce for breakfast.

This is just about the recipe I use for applesauce. I don't use sugar, instead I use a couple sweeter apples mixed in with the tart ones. And just cook it down more. YUM! I love warm apples!

Yum! Looks delicious and simple!

I made something similar this morning. Cut up the apples and added one can of jellied cranberry sauce. Cook until it's mush and you have a cran/applesauce. It is very good. I really enjoy your blog! Thanks for your great ideas.

I"ve been making all my meals for the week ahead of time on Sundays in the slow cookers... I had no idea how to REALLY use them before you came along! Thank you for making my life so much easier!!

That looks so good! I think I might sub out some apples for some rhubarb that is growing in my garden.

This looks delicious!
Hey, I liked that carrot pudding...I made it that night. My family wouldn't eat but I'm going to make it again for ME! And my mom, she liked it, too and asked for more.
Thank you for the goodies!

After an exhausting day; your comments made everything seems just much more light. You are a crack up!
June 14, 2011 at 2:25 PM
Oh yum...the only reason I don't like this recipe is because I'm going to be extremely tempted to eat the entire crock before anyone in my family has a chance to get near it!!!!

OMG - I am drooling ;-)

I'm wondering how in the world you knew I was thinking "Thank You!"? :) Also wondering, why didn't I think to make my favorite apple pie (sour cream apple pie) without a crust? I haven't had it since going GF. Thanks!

When i make pie, I just peel the apples and slice off of the core with my mandoline. ~ Margaret

when i'm in a BIG hurry or just exceptionally lazy, i use the bagged sliced apples and i don't even bother to peel them. still YUMMY!
June 14, 2011 at 5:45 PM
use the bagged sliced apples, just toss them in and call it "rustic" apple yum!

The Mommy-- I don't know what's going on with that! I wonder if Blogger thinks that's a spam page or something since there are so many links. I think all are up now, if it goes away again I think I'll need to break up the listing to a few pages.
weird.
Thank you SO Much for letting me know---I had no idea until you pointed that out. oxox

Hey Steph, could you make this without the butter (or less butter) or sub something in it's place? My husband has ibs and a lot of food quirks and can't handle butter well. He loves the cracker barrel apples so I know he would love this. Thanks!

Hi Sweetann, I think it would be great even without any butter. I might suggest spraying the crock though -- the apple gets awfully sticky and it might want some grease to clean nicely off the sides. :-)
