Turkey Meatballs with Cranberry Barbecue Sauce CrockPot Recipe

Day 30.

Q: Can you ever eat too many meatballs?

A: No. No you can not.

In honor of that little game that is occurring on Sunday, I tested out a party meatball dish sure to please drunken football viewers.

I loosely followed the recipe found in this book, as seen here.

You can either use store-bought meatballs, or make your own.

I have yet to find store-bought gluten free meatballs, so I made my own.

The Ingredients:

--1 lb turkey meatballs (2 lbs pictured)
--1/2 cup barbecue sauce
--1 can (16oz) jellied cranberry sauce
--1 teaspoon soy sauce

The Directions:

--cut cranberry sauce into slices
--place into bottom of stoneware insert
--add barbecue sauce and soy sauce
--top with cooked meatballs.

cook on low for 4-6 hours or high for 2-4

The cooking time depends on if your meatballs are frozen, thawed, or freshly baked.

The recipe card book says that these measurements are for 1 pound of meatballs. I used two. My dad thought it could use more sauce, my husband thought it was plenty saucy and one of the kids wanted all sauce washed off.

Use your best judgement as to how much sauce to make for your particular family.

  1. You're a genius!! I think the cranberry/turkey combo is going to be awesome!!!

Have a great Superbowl! I'm Canadian so it's not as popular up here....

  2. It sounds like you got the sauce just right since nobody is happy with it, LOL!

Seriously, these look really good. My fiancé is a cranberry fanatic and I love meatballs, but have never made them with turkey. Yumm! I'm definitely going to try this with some homemade cranberry sauce that I'll puree (we have so many leftover bags in the freezer).

By the way, I'd enjoy hearing what other crockpot cookbooks you recommend.

  3. CS--I am hoping to get away with not watching any of it---I have a project due next week and if I can shove the kids out the door with Adam to watch it elsewhere, that would give me a good 4hrs by myself. oh, and I could take a nap.

~M--I have the best luck with the throw-away mags from the grocery store. I seem to need large pictures to motivate me. I have borrowed from the library Fix it and Forget It and SlowCooking for Dummies. My favorite library find was America's Best Slow Cooker Recipes---the kids and I appreciated the large photos. But they didn't match the recipes--you had to find "page 45" instead of having the photo directly across from the recipe.

Hi Stephanie, I came here via a comment on Antique Mommy's blog about being in a food rut, and boy am I glad I did! I just went back to work after being a SAHM for 18 years and I have enlisted the help of my crockpot, too. I'm at work right now (not busy) and was able to read your whole blog! Thank you so very much for testing all those new recipes. I took me some notes :) There is vegetable soup in my crockpot as we speak. It should be better than the last time I made it (2 weeks ago) when the broccoli flavor overtook all the other vegetables by force. I even added some barley found in the back of my pantry. Aside from soup and chili, I only have one really good recipe that came from a very old cookbook when "crockery cooking" was a new-fangled thing. I will send it to you sometime when I am home.
    Thanks again, Nancy in Indiana

  10. I tried this with two other variations. The first is a can of cranberry sauce and a jar of chili sauce. The second is a jar of grape jelly and a bottle of cranberry sauce. Both are good. Next time I will try your barbecus sauce variation.

  11. Sorry! The second variation should have said a jar of grape jelly and a bottle of chili sauce. I had typed it correctly the first time but lost it before I could post.

  12. I'm making these as I type this, though I forgot that this was supposed to be a crockpot and not a make at the last minute recipe so I'm doing mine in the oven. Oh, and I'm using chicken mince rather than turkey mince as the meat in my meatballs. I love cranberry so I hope these and some mash potatoes hit the spot on another cold night down here! Thanks for sharing :)

  13. I made these and they were TERRIBLE. I guess maybe the flavor just wasn't one that agreed with this family lol. My husband poor thing, tried so hard to make a brave face until I took a bite and was like BLARGH! :)
