Slow Cooker Baked Bean Round-Up

You can NEVER have enough baked bean recipes! These are the most requested baked beans, in order, from A Year of Slow Cooking
I blinked, and now it's the end of the school year.

It's full-on summer mode in our house, which means that any sort of schedule or sense of parental control has gone completely out the window.

I was good for about a week --- I kept the TV off between 10 and 4 and we were outside more than in, and the kids were cooperating with me and each other.

it was blissful.

and then it ended.

I now have a sore throat from all the yelling...

We're trying to camp as many weekends as we can this summer.

We're  not doing anything spectacular -- just staying close to home and testing out different campgrounds within an hour or two from the house.

We are the proud new owners of a tiny pop-up tent trailer, and we love it. I must admit that I'm not the best camper in the world, but I'm really trying to get better.

I love the idea of unplugging for a bit here and there, and I think it's important for the kids to get dirty and not freak out when they come across bugs.

I'm acutely aware that I'm raising three girls, and am trying my hardest to expose them to as much as I can and foster self-sufficiency.

the best part of the pop-up? It has outlets. For the crockpot(s).

A bit of comfort from home is not a bad thing, right?

Well, of course you need three asterisks! :)
I've started using wide-mouth thermoses (thermi?) to "cook" in, on camping trips; you can make vegetable soup or "Spanish" instant rice with about 2 minutes of boiling, and a few hours of vacuum-bottle steeping. Must try baked beans this way, too; might be a good small-batch method.

  5. Stephanie:
I love your site! I started following you during its first year (and tried out many a recipe). My favorites are Sweet and Sour Tofu, Vegetarian Tortilla Soup, Vegetarian Curry and I "veganized" your recipe for Taco Soup. I so glad you kept evolving when your year was up and am delighted with the Life Improvement articles. I know you said you feel like you're treading water sometimes but, as far as I can tell, it looks like you're swimming the English Channel! Keep swimming - I love what you're doing!

I love your blog and refer to it often for crockpot receipes especially in the summer. Do you mind sharing some info about your pop up trailer? We camped in tents for many years when we were young. We were thinking of starting again in a pop up trailer and am having a hard time finding out info on new ones.

    Thanks,
    Susan R.

  7. Hi Susan, I'd be happy to! We are really enjoying the popup so far. We opted for a simple, Jayco10, and did buy new. We do not have a toilet or shower in it, and I liked the extra storage the 10footer had. It's light enough that we can pull it with our minivan, and is short enough that it can fit in the driveway.

We did look at used ones, but we had a hard time finding a used 10 foot, the ones in our area on sale were all much longer.
